I’m sometimes asked about shipping charges. Why not have a sliding scale of charges depending on the item?
When we were setting up the shop I thought quite hard about shipping charges – it hurt!
On the one hand it would be nice to have a lower charge for smaller low value items, but then at the higher end people might expect a shipping discount for a high order.
The heavier stuff tends to be the higher value products. Items like axes are heavy and high value but the margin for the Gransfors Bruks doesn’t allow for much of a discount for shipping.
In the end I decided not to make things too complicated and just have a flat charge for an order regardless of the items purchased.
Sometimes this may seem like a bad deal, if all you want is an O’Tom Tick Twister but if you are buying a Karrimor SF rucksack or a 2.5pt Kelly Kettle then you finish ahead as the £3.95 P&P doesn’t cover the cost of shipping.
Especially when you take into account the fact we have to charge you 17.5% VAT on P&P, so we only get about £3.36 of that to go towards shipping costs.
