Great End Sprinkling Tarn Borrowdale Seathwaite Cumbria Lake District

Great End from Sprinkling Tarn a "favourite" spot for winter hikers

Following the “very fortunate” survival of a climber caught in an avalanche at Window Gully, Borrowdale, in early March, a man has died after falling 300ft while walking at Great End.

As yet unnamed, the man in his 30’s was caught in a snow slide and unable to stop before plunging over the crag at Sprinkling Tarn, Seathwaite, on Monday.

The alarm was raised at 12.30pm and Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and an RAF helicopter were called to the incident. The rescuers helped the man’s two friends to safety but the fallen hiker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area is a favourite with hikers but winter conditions on the fells can be treacherous. There have been 13 fatalities at Great End since 1947.
