Autumn had finally arrived. But this time of year you never know where you are with the weather. One day it looks like autumn but it feels like summer. The next day the sun’s shining but you’re freezing cold.
It’s a fact that the British summer now goes right into October. This is great as it means there’s still time to get some outdoors fun in before the weather really turns nasty. Having said that, make yourself aware that the weather is changing and be prepared.
That’s right, BE PREPARED.
Whatever the weather
There’s a reason the Scouts have it as their motto, it’s common sense. So the first common sense thing you want to do before you go on a jaunt is to know exactly where you’re going and get an accurate weather forecast. Sites like Metcheck, AccuWeather or NetWeather can be a real help here. They provide accurate weather forecasts for any given area so you can check them before you go. Double check on the day too. These sites give weather updates by the hour so you have no excuse for being caught out.
Get kitted out
Pack your kit appropriately.
If you’re just out for the day chuck a Snugpak Poncho in your pack. Small enough for even a little day bag but sure to keep you dry when the heavens open.
For longer or more adventurous hikes the Surviva Jak Emergency Jacket is essential. Weather changes in the hills quickly and for the tiny amount of space it takes up in a pack, it’s worth it to save your life.
Get a head, get a hat. The Mountain Junky Beenie is as soft as their base layer t-shirts.
Yes, this sort of thing is basic but the trouble with basic is that it becomes easy to forget. So consider this a refresher. Being too hot is as bad as being too cold. Don’t get caught out. Be aware and be safe.
